Scenes of Dublin after the Easter Uprising

Show full synopsis

The Easter Rising took place between 24 and 29 April 1916. This newsreel shows the aftermath, with British troops in occupation over a rubble-strewn city. The titles, in keeping with the newsreel style of the time, say very little, but there is mention of 'rebels' and looting. There is particular emphasis placed on the Four Courts and the gutted Post Office, both of which had been occupied during the Rising. It is a perfect example of the passive stance taken by the newsreels, supplying the moving pictures to stories the audience had already read in the newspapers.
