In the news in the late '90s as translator of Yasmina Reza's plays, Art (1996) and Conversations after a Burial (2000), Christopher Hampton had his own considerable theatrical reputation for plays such as The Philanthropist (1970), Tales from Hollywood (1983-4, at London's National Theatre) and his version of Dangerous Liaisons, filmed in 1988 (US), won an Adapted Screenplay Oscar and BAFTA.

His first screenplay was for the Claire Bloom version of A Doll's House (d. Patrick Garland, 1973) and he has since adapted Graham Greene's The Honorary Consul (d. John Mackenzie, 1983) and Conrad's The Secret Agent (UK/US, d. Hampton, 1996) as well as writing screenplays for The Good Father (d. Mike Newell, 1986), Carrington (UK/France, d. Hampton, 1994, BAFTA-nominated), Total Eclipse (UK/Belgium/France, d. Agnieszka Holland, 1995), and Mary Reilly (UK/US, d. Stephen Frears, 1996). For TV he provided witty adaptations of The History Man (BBC, 1981) and Hotel du Lac (BBC, 1986).
