A series of games of 'Tetherball' played aboard the Carisbrooke Castle.

Show full synopsis

Filmed aboard the ship Carisbrooke Castle by R.W. Paul, Tetherball, or Do-Do (also known as Club and Ball Game Aboard Ship) is an actuality record of the game in question being played by four sailors.

Tetherball (also known as Swingball) is an ideal sport not only for playing on board ship (it requires very little in the way of either equipment or playing area, and there is no risk of the ball going overboard) but also for a film such as this, where the entire game can easily be encompassed in a single shot that reveals all the relevant details, including the scoring. Other sports such as football, rugby and cricket were also filmed at the time, but presented rather greater challenges in terms of effective staging for the camera.

Michael Brooke
