Show full synopsis

The BAFTA award-winning Shadowscan (Channel 4, 18/12/2001) is director Tinge Krishnan's third short film. A surreal portrait of the Accident and Emergency department of a city hospital, Shadowscan is partly based on Tinge's own experience as a junior doctor. The film is inspired by the work of Danish director Lars Von Trier, and the lighting effects created by photographer Robbie Ryan imbue the film with a surreal atmosphere.

Shadowscan travels through the last moments of a suicidal person, and in doing so leaves the viewer reflecting on the unexpected twists life can take. The dark subject matter of self-harm contrasts with the light hearted, almost spoof episodes of a Bollywood-style dance sequence. The film's ability to sketch the personalities of its two main characters so effectively in just eleven minutes leaves one wondering what Krishnan might be capable of in a feature film.
