War/World Pictorial News (1940-1946)

Middle East-produced British newsreel that ran throughout World War II

Main image of War/World Pictorial News (1940-1946)

The War Pictorial News ran from September 1940 to August 1946. It was compiled by the Cairo office of the Ministry of Information, and intended specifically for Allied troops stationed in the Middle East and Mediterranean. To ensure wide coverage, versions were released in English, French or Arabic as appropriate. Though it often recycled many stories from domestic British newsreels, its Cairo base meant that it also had early access to Soviet-sourced stories. In October 1945, it was renamed the World Pictorial News.
