Synopsis

Series 1, Episode 6 (BBC2, tx. 20/8/2001)

Manager David Brent makes Alex, a driver from Wernham Hogg's warehouse, redundant. Alex challenges the decision but Brent ducks responsibility.

Brent tries to impress his new secretary, Karen, in a meeting with Tim about why he wants to leave the firm. When Tim expresses his unhappiness Brent is angry at his apparent ingratitude and storms off. Dawn tells the camera that she wants to follow Tim in leaving to try and find more fulfilment.

Area Manager Jenny arrives, telling Brent that she is being promoted and the board have suggested he take her place. Brent dismisses her concerns for his team, who will now be made redundant or moved to Swindon, and can't conceal his delight when he breaks the news of to them. Some are furious - loyal deputy Gareth is heartbroken.

That night, at the works disco, Brent tells them all that he has declined the board's offer. In the toilets staff member Malcolm questions this, having heard that he failed to get the job after his medical revealed high blood pressure.

Dawn asks Tim about his plans. He tells her he has been offered promotion and to Dawn's disgust starts aping Brent's management speak.

Brent smugly tells the camera what a great boss he is and boasts of his popularity.
