Synopsis

Warning: screenonline full synopses contain 'spoilers' which give away key plot points. Don't read on if you don't want to know the ending!

Mike Wood is a Teddy Boy. He and his friends are turned away from the Flamingo Jazz Club in London's West End. The doorman refuses to give a specific reason, and one of Mike's friends says that this might encourage him to make trouble.

In a more formal interview setting, Mike says that people generally believe that Teddy Boys cause trouble. He admits that they assemble in gangs and are influenced by their leader - but also says that the police pick on him just because of the way he looks. However, he himself hasn't encountered much trouble since he was in the army. He now has a job working ten hours a day, seven days a week, for £12-13 per week. He says his ambition is to "live it up", and he would do almost anything to achieve his aspirations, including breaking the law.

In his flat in Hounslow West, Mike prepares to go out. He is very particular about his clothes, looks after them and pays a lot for them. He puts on his waistcoat, drape jacket, narrow trousers and thick-soled leather shoes. At the barber's, he asks for a 'be-bop' style. The barber asks him whether he would like a shampoo and set, or a perm, explaining that the cost of the latter would range from two pounds five shillings to five guineas. Mike settles for a three-guinea perm. Two female hairdressers put curlers in his hair. He admires the end result: he has a quiff, but not too pronounced.

Mike and his brother play pinball and snooker before Mike goes to meet his girlfriend at Piccadilly Circus underground station. They go to the Flamingo Jazz Club in Wardour Street to dance. Afterwards, Mike kisses her goodnight and walks off down a neon-lit street.
