Edition originally transmitted on ITV on 9 July 1972

Bamber Gascoigne presents the first round in a best-of-three series final - an all-Oxford affair between Keble and University Colleges, meaning that for the first time in some five years, as Gascoigne notes, an Oxford team will be the winner. Lest foul play be suspected, Gascoigne also points out that he himself went to Cambridge. The winning team will, he announces, receive a magnificent prize of 19 etchings inspired by Chaucer's Canterbury Tales by British artist Elizabeth Frink.

After a hard fought contest, in which Keble are very slow to get off the mark, University College are the winners of the first leg by 255 points to 150. Gascoigne invites the audience to return for next week's second leg.
