Episode 6 "Decisions"
Written by Donald Wilson, directed by David Giles

Young Jolyon and his second wife, Helene, go to the botanical gardens so that he can paint. There, they see Bosinney, who Jolyon's daughter June loves, meet with another woman. It is clear that the two are very much in love, and their furtiveness suggests that the woman must be married. Later that day, Jolyon and Helene go to his father's house for tea with June. Soames bursts in, aggrieved by Bosinney's cost overruns for the house he is building for him. Bosinney refuses to do the decorations for the house with a pre-approved budget, but Soames is unwilling to dismiss him as starting anew would also be expensive. June angrily says that the house is really Bosinney's as it represents his artistic temperament, even if Soames has paid for it. Soames says that he plans to take legal steps to remedy the situation. Helene suggests that if he actually likes the house, then he shouldn't complain. Soames storms out furiously. Helene tries to comfort June, but is rebuffed. After June leaves, Jolyon's father tells him that the rumour is that Bosinney is in fact conducting an affair with Irene, Soames' wife.

Soames and Bosinney exchange letters about the expenditure. Uncle James accompanies Irene to the new house, but is angered when she refuses to answer any questions about her conduct. While James looks the house over, Bosinney and Irene exchange loving confidences. Soames arrives and tells him that the unapproved cost overruns of £350 will get Bosinney in trouble. At home, Irene and Soames quarrel. He refuses to grant her a divorce. She tells him that she even loathes the sight of him and locks the doors to her bedroom, despite his protestations.

Jolyon goes to see Bosinney and warns him against his course of action, especially as regards to property. As he leaves, Irene arrives. She has finally decided to give herself to Bosinney. Jolyon's father is angry about Soames' decision to sue Bosinney, seeing it as a form of petty revenge, and decides to take his business away from his legal firm. Jolyon tells his father that he is convinced that Bosinney is madly in love with Irene and that any match with June must be completely forgotten. Irene returns home after spending the afternoon with Bosinney. In a jealous rage, Soames rapes her.
