Sting (1951-)

Actor, Singer, Musician

Main image of Sting (1951-)

Sting (born Gordon Sumner in Wallsend on 2 October 1951) achieved massive fame fronting the post-punk trio, The Police. An intelligent and charismatic leader, he had his first screen role as a punk in the quintessential mod film Quadrophenia (d. Franc Roddam, 1979). He distinguished himself as the unnerving Martin Taylor in the Dennis Potter-written Brimstone and Treacle (d. Richard Loncraine, 1982), but his film work has generally tended towards cult status; a minor role as respectable barman JD in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (d. Guy Ritchie, 1998) was his most populist film work to date. He married (1) Frances Tomelty (1976-82) and (2) Trudie Styler, who appeared in The Grotesque (d. John-Paul Davidson, 1996).
