Shenson, Walter (1919-2000)

Producer

Main image of Shenson, Walter (1919-2000)

Stanford University-educated Walter Shenson worked in Hollywood from 1941, on promotional shorts, and came to Britain in the mid '50s, spending two years in charge of publicity for Columbia's European productions.

Branching out as an independent producer, he scored successes with the comedies, The Mouse That Roared (d. Jack Arnold, 1959) and The Mouse on the Moon (d. Richard Lester, 1963), but his real acumen was shown in his faith in The Beatles as a lasting phenomenon and he produced both A Hard Day's Night (d. Lester, 1964) and Help! (d. Lester, 1965). Both cashed in hugely on the popularity of the Fab Four who showed engaging cinematic potential.

He made several more films in Britain without repeating this success and in 1973 returned to the US, where his films included Reuben, Reuben (d. Robert Ellis Miller, 1983).
