Blanchett, Cate (1969-)

Actor

Main image of Blanchett, Cate (1969-)

Willowy blonde beauty Cate Blanchett (born in Melbourne in 1969) won BAFTA, Golden Globes and other awards and an Oscar nomination for her performance as Elizabeth (d. Shekhar Kapur, 1998). She brought youthful sensuality and intensity to the role, contrasting with her role as priggish Lady Chiltern in An Ideal Husband (UK/US, d. Oliver Parker, 1999) and the vulnerable opportunist, Lola, in The Man Who Cried (UK/France/US, d. Sally Potter, 2000). She graduated from Sydney's National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1992, did some well-regarded theatre and TV work, and made a major impact in several Australian films, culminating in half the title role in Oscar and Lucinda (Australia/US, d. Gillian Armstrong, 1997), opposite Ralph Fiennes. She went States-side for Pushing Tin (d. Mike Newell, 1999) and The Talented Mr Ripley (d. Anthony Minghella, 1999), and seems set for an international career, with roles in each of the Lord of the Rings films (NZ/US, d. Peter Jackson, 2001, 2002, 2003). She won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her uncanny impersonation of Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator (Germany/US, d. Martin Scorsese, 2004).
