 Trevor McDonald came to England from Trinidad on a broadcasting scholarship and got his first job at the BBC World Service in London. He had already done some television work in the West Indies and within three years he was offered a job at ITN, where he has remained ever since.
In 1973, ITN was relatively young and had a reputation for being a progressive, go-getting news television station. This may account for his steady rise to anchor the main news programmes. During his long career, McDonald has interviewed the most powerful people in the country, as well as presenting hard-hitting news features of national and international interest.
In 1999, when ITV axed the News at Ten slot, McDonald was offered his own programme, Tonight With Trevor McDonald from where he continues to investigate and present the critical stories of the day.
He was awarded an OBE and knighted in the 1999 Queen's Birthday Honours.
