The regular writer of director Danny Boyle and producer Andrew Macdonald's films, including Shallow Grave (1994), Trainspotting (1996), for which he won Oscar and BAFTA nominations for adapted screenplay, as well as several other awards and nominations, A Life Less Ordinary (1997) and The Beach (US, 2000). He trained as a doctor of medicine.
