A lanky (6'2"), Welsh-speaking star who made his film debut in August (d. Anthony Hopkins, 1996), the Wales-set adaptation of Uncle Vanya, but came to prominence in Notting Hill (UK/US, d. Roger Michell, 1999) as Hugh Grant's crotch-scratching flatmate in greying underpants. The Guildhall-trained actor has been in constant demand since, though it must be said that two of the demands he answered - Love, Honor and Obey (co-d. Dominic Anciano, Ray Burdis, 2000) and Kevin and Perry Go Large (UK/US, d. Ed Bye, 2000) - could have finished many a career for good. In the US, he had a major role in The Shipping News (d. Lasse Hallström, 2001). His brother, Llyr Ifans, is also an actor, and they starred together in Twin Town (d. Kevin Allen, 1997). Brian McFarlane, Encyclopedia of British Film
