Ifans, Rhys (1966-)

Actor

Main image of Ifans, Rhys (1966-)

A lanky (6'2"), Welsh-speaking star who made his film debut in August (d. Anthony Hopkins, 1996), the Wales-set adaptation of Uncle Vanya, but came to prominence in Notting Hill (UK/US, d. Roger Michell, 1999) as Hugh Grant's crotch-scratching flatmate in greying underpants.

The Guildhall-trained actor has been in constant demand since, though it must be said that two of the demands he answered - Love, Honor and Obey (co-d. Dominic Anciano, Ray Burdis, 2000) and Kevin and Perry Go Large (UK/US, d. Ed Bye, 2000) - could have finished many a career for good. In the US, he had a major role in The Shipping News (d. Lasse Hallström, 2001).

His brother, Llyr Ifans, is also an actor, and they starred together in Twin Town (d. Kevin Allen, 1997).
