The older daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and Tony Richardson, like sister Joely, first appeared as a tot in father's The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968). She trained at Central School and quickly built up a formidable stage reputation, with work at the Old Vic, a 1985 Three Sisters, co-starring mother and aunt, Lynn Redgrave, and her Tony-winning performance as Sally Bowles in Broadway's Cabaret (1999).

Films have been sporadic and idiosyncratic: Mary Shelley in Ken Russell's maniacal Gothic (1986), a gentle vicar's wife in A Month in the Country (d. Pat O'Connor, 1987), as Patty Hearst (UK/US, d. Paul Schrader, 1988), and the disquieting, Venice-set The Comfort of Strangers (UK/Italy, d. Schrader, 1990).

In the US, she starred in the psychological drama, Nell (d. Michael Apted, 1994) and the remake of The Parent Trap (d. Nancy Meyers, 1998), and she has done some striking TV, including Suddenly Last Summer (d. Richard Eyre, 1993) and the title role in Zelda (d. Pat O'Connor, 1993), but the theatre has been her most rewarding medium. Her second husband (1994) was Liam Neeson. She died on 18 March 2009 following a skiing accident.
