Actor

Suave Steed of TV's cult series, The Avengers (ITV, 1961-69; New Avengers, ITV, 1976-77), Eton-educated, Webber Douglas-trained Patrick Macnee became a household name and face, perhaps at the cost of a more interesting film career. Post-1970, most of his work was US - or Canada-based.

Before finding his debonair screen persona, he had small roles in ten British films and went to Hollywood for Les Girls (d. George Cukor, 1957); post-Avengers, he made only a handful of British films in 30 years, including the Bond caper, A View to a Kill (d. John Glen, 1985). Most of his American work was for TV, but he plays Sir Denis Eaton-Hogg in the spoof documentary, This Is Spinal Tap (US, d. Rob Reiner, 1984).
