A look at everyday life in the crofting community of Achriesgill in Sutherland.

Show full synopsis

Crofters (1944) was one of three titles in the Pattern of Britain series produced in the latter half of the war. Superbly photographed by Peter Hennessy, it was set in the small crofting township of Achriesgill in Sutherland. The picture of everyday life was rounded out with impression of peat cutting and the harvest. Wool production was a key part of the crofting economy, The community of crofters are seen working together in shearing sheep by hand. This is an example of how the burden of work is shared throughout the community, so that no croft is left unworked for lack of labour.
