A description of the life of the fishing and farming communities in Aberdeenshire.

Show full synopsis

Fishing has been important to Scotland for centuries, both as food for home consumption and as a commodity for export. There has been fishing in Scottish waters as long as there has been coastal habitation. On the West coast and around the island communities of the highlands, fishing has been combined with crofting to produce a living, while off the East coast deep sea fishing has traditionally been a full-time occupation, This documentary illustrates the fishing and farming industries, core to the economy of Aberdeenshire, in the mid-1960s. The clip gives a very good impression of the hardy work involved in harvesting the sea.

This was one of several local authority sponsored films produced and marketed by Films of Scotland. The municipalities used film as one element in their marketing of their areas to potential inward investors and new employers. The attractions of the area as places to live and work for both workers and their families were highlighted.
