Opening of the Kiel Canal was one of a series of actuality shorts filmed by Birt Acres in 1895 - this one appears to have been shot on June 20, on the occasion of the opening of the Kiel Canal by the German Kaiser Wilhelm II. Acres made other films at the same time, though they have not survived.

The original negative of Opening of the Kiel Canal is held by the Science Museum.
