Synopsis

Warning: screenonline full synopses contain 'spoilers' which give away key plot points. Don't read on if you don't want to know the ending!

In a run-down working-class area, people queue for bread. An unemployed local resident arrives to be means-tested. He is turned down for unemployment benefit because his wife has a cleaning job.

In desperation, the man steals some bread, but is spotted, chased and eventually caught by the police. Later, after acquitting some upper-class youths for vandalism, a judge sentences the man to a spell in prison. The film ends with actuality footage from the 1934 hunger strike, organised by the United Front.
