Othello (1920)

Synopsis

Warning: screenonline full synopses contain 'spoilers' which give away key plot points. Don't read on if you don't want to know the ending!

NB: This is a description of the two minutes of footage that survive. The original running time is likely to have been nearer ten.

The animator's live-action hand is seen sketching Othello, who comes to life to take over the final application of burnt cork ("Othello the Moor was black - but he was not as black as he was painted!").

Desdemona runs a bathing machine, and is wooed by Othello. Finally, he smothers her - but, unlike the play, it's with burnt cork and kisses.
