British Asian youths discuss race, cultural identity and their place in modern British society in this lively collage of interviews set to a Bhangra and Bangla beat.

These lessons use the BFI documentary I'm British But... as a tool for young people to consider what being British means to them. The themes of immigration, colonisation and multiculturalism are raised to give pupils a more meaningful platform from which to explore their own identities. The three lessons should develop students' understanding of how they define themselves and can be used as the basis for students' own short films exploring their identity and ideas about Britishness.

Owing to the sensitive nature of the issues covered, teachers are encouraged to adapt the suggested activities to ensure they are suitable for their audience.

Lesson 3: Cultural conflict: How does my identity compliment or conflict with others?

Lesson Objective

  • Pupils use the documentary and the song that runs through the film to consider how and why cultures can conflict. Pupils will also finish their 'identi-kit', which can form the basis for a short piece to camera in which pupils describe what being British means to them.
 

Trailer

Begin by watching the final segment of the documentary (17 mins to the end). Working in pairs, ask pupils to list the challenges faced by the interviewees and their families in moving to or growing up in Britain.

 
 

Main Attraction

Using worksheet three, read through the text of the song that runs through I'm British But... as a class.

After a brief discussion exploring pupils' initial responses to the song, divide the class into groups of three, asking them to work through the speech bubbles on the worksheet in discussion and generate three further points that they find interesting about the song (some pupils may prefer to generate questions they have about the lyrics).

Round up this activity by giving each group a piece of large paper (e.g. sugar paper) which they need to split into three sections. Pupils can then produce a collective response to the three questions posed in the reflection activity on the worksheet.

Note: Pupils will need some context about the period of the Raj - a time when India was a colony of Britain and would use military force to maintain order.

 
 

End Credits

Pupils can now complete the third identi-kit section of this series of lessons to produce a description of their cultural identity. This can form the basis of a student's own short film piece in which they describe what being British means to them.
