These questions can be used to focus students' thinking while watching the film and/or to develop their understanding of film language.

CAMERA/COMPOSITION

  • List the different types of shots and camera angles used and think about how these contribute to the overall tone of the film.

CHARACTERS AND PEOPLE

  • How would you describe the characters in the film?
  • How does the film construct the characters of each member of the family, given that we don't hear them speak?
  • Why are the roles of the grandmother and son so important?

NARRATIVE

  • Can you summarise the story of this film in one sentence? What might be the tag-line if it was sold as a DVD?
  • Is there a clear beginning, middle and end to this film?
  • Can the narrator be described as a character in this story? What is his role?
  • Why did the filmmakers choose to use a narrator?

SYMBOLISM

  • Note down any examples of imagery or symbolism that you notice.

SOUND

  • Describe the musical score of the film. How does it support the film's central message?
